LinkedIn optimization guide
LinkedIn optimization for tech career changers
LinkedIn is the primary talent sourcing tool for tech companies. A well-optimized profile generates inbound recruiter messages — even before you apply anywhere. Here is how to set yours up.
LinkedIn vs your resume
Your resume is for applying. Your LinkedIn profile is for being found. Recruiters search LinkedIn before posting jobs, during open roles, and when building pipelines for future positions. An optimized profile generates inbound opportunity — a passive job search that runs while you sleep.
The headline (most important field)
The headline appears next to your name everywhere on LinkedIn. It defaults to your current job title — which is wrong for career changers. Recruiters search by keywords. Your headline must contain the job titles and skills you want to be found for.
Formula
[Target role] | [Key skill 1] + [Key skill 2] | [Differentiator]
Example — Operations to Product
Aspiring Product Manager | Former Operations Lead | MBA | Passionate about B2B SaaS
Example — Finance to Data
Data Analyst Trainee | SQL | Tableau | Excel | Transitioning from 5 years in Finance
The About section
Three paragraphs, maximum 2000 characters. Each paragraph has a job.
The rest of your profile
The experience section
Same translation exercise as your resume. Outcome-focused bullets. Add tech tools you used even in non-tech roles — Excel, Salesforce, Jira, SQL. Add your portfolio projects, courses, and certifications here too. A 'Career Transition Projects' entry is legitimate.
Skills and endorsements
Add all relevant skills (max 50). Prioritize technical skills you have, tools you have used, and methodologies — Agile, Scrum, SQL, Python, Figma. Ask connections to endorse you. Even non-tech connections can endorse communication, project management, and analytical skills.
The profile photo and banner
Photo: professional, clear face, plain background. LinkedIn profiles with photos get 21x more views. Banner: customize with a relevant visual — your target industry, a quote about your field, or a simple branded background.
Activity and engagement
Post once a week about your learning journey, projects, or industry observations. Comment thoughtfully on posts by people in your target field. LinkedIn's algorithm rewards active profiles with more search visibility.
